Hue in central Vietnam is the former capital of of the Nguyen emperors in Vietnam and a stunning World Heritage City. Not only famous for its peaceful tranquility but also for the ‘Complex of Monuments in Hue’. Pronounced ‘Hway’, this deeply evocative capital of the Nguyen emperors still resonates with the glories of imperial Vietnam, even though many of its finest buildings were destroyed during the American War.

Hue owes its charm partly to its location on the Perfume River – picturesque on a clear day, atmospheric even in less flattering weather. Today the city blends new and old as sleek modern hotels tower over crumbling century-old Citadel walls.

There’s also the thrill of the boat trip along the romantic Perfume River, exploring the Complex of Monuments including many of the Nguyen Emperors, together with palaces and mausoleums. A few of our favorite’s worth visiting are those of Khai Dinh and Minh Mang or even Tu Duc.

Connecting destinations:

For those traveling south, the most beautiful way to reach Hoi An is by a full day motorbike tour via the famous Hai Van Pass.

For those traveling north, Dong Hoi, to access Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, is just a 3-hour train or bus ride away.

Traveling straight up to Ninh Binh or Hanoi can be done by overnight bus or by more comfortable soft sleeper trains, which both take around 11 hours. They are easily organized by us.
