Itinerary Details Day 13: Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi Tunnels

Your tour guide for today will warmly welcome you in between 8-8.30am at your hotel and pick you up to start your fantastic cultural and historical adventure!

Located 60km from Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi is now a popular spot for both Vietnamese & foreign tourists alike. The 200km network of tunnels became legendary because of their vital role in the war. In their heyday, the tunnels were fully functioning underground cities including numerous trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centers & kitchens.

Today, ducks and water buffaloes happily co-exist by the rivers along the side of the road, the peaceful rice paddy scenery masking the areas violent history. Visitors find it hard to imagine the destruction, damage & defoliation throughout this whole area, caused by bombing and mines. There is plenty of evidence of the fierce battle that took place here during the 1960’s when Cu Chi was a "Free Target Zone".

We start our tour in the morning and before entering the tunnels visitors can watch a short introductory video, showing how the tunnels were constructed. You’ll spend the next hour exploring the tunnels before having a refreshing tea and cassava, which was eaten by the guerrillas during the war. We’ll then return to Saigon for lunch at a local restaurant before the tour ends.

The further afternoon and evening are at your own interpretation to explore Ho Chi Minh City by yourself.

Weather & what to bring

Vietnam has a diverse climate that varies significantly from region to region:

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi to Sapa) Weather;

  • April to October: temperatures between 30-35°C with occasional bursts of heavy rain.
  • December to March: temperatures between 10-15°C. February and March can be damp with drizzle and overcast skies.

Central Vietnam (Hue to Nha Trang)

  • Nha Trang: sunshine all year round apart from November and December when the area has heavy rain.
  • Dalat: cooler than the coastal area, particularly from November to March.
  • Da Nang and Hue: typhoons from mid October to mid December.

The South (Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet)

  • May to October: hot and wet
  • November to April: hot and humid

Please note: The weather can be very unpredictable so it may be a good idea to carry an umbrella or raincoat with you. You can purchase these from supermarkets and general stores.

It is always possible to leave some of your luggage at your hotels but if you feel more comfortable to take it all it will not be a problem.

Luggage and bags:

A daypack to bring is a good idea. These you can easily buy in Hanoi.

Clothing/ Shoes/ Weather Gear:

Bring clothes to suit the local weather.

Always try to keep your spare clothes in a watertight bag to ensure they stay dry if there is a sudden downpour. The northern climate is totally unlike the rest of Vietnam.
