MEKONG DELTA 3D2N (Budget Group Tour – finish Phnom Penh)

From the lushly verdant rice paddies of the rolling countryside to the rich and buzzing waterways that serve as a vital lifeline, the Mekong Delta is a place that never sleeps! On this budget 3 days and 2 nights Mekong Delta Tour we leave Ho Chi Minh City and make our way towards My Tho to take a leisurely boat ride along the river. Enjoy a trip by rowing boat towards Ben Tre through small palm tree covered canals before we overnight in Can Tho. Although loosing some of its greatness visiting Cai Rang floating market is still an experience, we visit a local rice noodle making shop and Tra Su Bird Sanctuary before we arrive in Chau Doc at the Cambodian border. The next day you’ll have a thrilling ride by fast boat which takes you right in the centre of Phnom Penh where the tour ends.

DAY 1: HCMC – My Tho – Ben Tre – Can Tho

Your tour guide for today will warmly welcome you and pick you up from your hotel before we begin our fantastic Mekong Delta adventure!

We leave Ho Chi Minh and enjoy the scenic journey along the National Highway, which is bordered by the seasonally green rice fields. On our arrival at My Tho, we first visit the Vinh Trang pagoda before we take a leisurely boat ride along the river flanked by stilt houses, fruit plantations and fishing villages.

We’ll make our way to Tortoise islet and have a traditional lunch (we upgraded the quality of the lunch) in the pleasant orchard garden, before a quick boat ride to An Khanh – a less touristy attraction in Ben Tre. Enjoy cruising on a hand-rowed sampan under the shade of the water coconut trees, which flourish along these natural canals, before sharing a refreshing seasonal fruit & honey tea to the sound of “Southern Vietnamese folk music”, performed by locals.

We head on to visit a family business which epitomizes this idyllic rural lifestyle to taste their delicious coconut candy and observe their pastoral life as you roam through the numerous fruit plantations and villages. We proceed to Can Tho where we overnight at the hotel (2*).

The rest of the evening is at your leisure, to relax & soak up the ambiance or perhaps explore the bustling Can Tho market.

DAY 2: Can Tho – Cai Rang – Tra Su – Chau Doc

After breakfast we take a leisurely boat trip to explore the picturesque tributaries of the Lower Mekong River (Bassac River) before making our way to the fascinating Cai Răng floating market, which is the liveliest in the whole religion.

It’s now time for a chance to see how the traditional Vietnamese vermicelli soup is made and have a wander around the village; meeting friendly local people and experiencing how to cross a “Monkey Bridge” which is built by only one stem of bamboo. Fully relax in the tranquil environment of the beautiful orchard garden.

We’ll stop for lunch (we upgraded the quality of the lunch) and proceed to Chau Doc to continue the tour with a visit to Tra Su, the wild bird sanctuary. We cruise smoothly with small boats to discover the arrays of splendid canals deep into the forest while watching storks, cranes and other tropical birds. On the way back stop we visit Sam Mountain, the Cave pagoda (if time permitted).

We head back to Chau Doc where we overnight at the hotel (2*).

Useful information

Especially for the north and central Vietnam;

In the period between November and April, the weather is variable, from sunny to cold and rainy. It is advisable during this period to bring some rain gear with some warmer clothes. In the period from April to November, it is good to pack a hat with a wide brim, sunscreen (at least SPF15) and a reliable insect repellent. A thin rain poncho is useful all year round.

The south of Vietnam is generally a lot warmer all year round, so warm clothing is not really necessary.
